and through the hat pulled down over my eyes
i can see the ghost of christmas lights

and i'm not thinking about what i'm missing
and i'm not thinking about what i'm thinking
and i forgot that i could do that
i forgot that i could feel that

i got stung when i was young
afraid of bugs that buzz and hum underneath the sun
but my friend meg is a beekeeper
and she taught me more about them than the pain i learned

like when they get blown down to the ground when they're off scouting out a new place to call home when it gets too crowded in their own
we don't call her the queen for nothing but she ain't good at flying
and they have each other but they could still use our help

the bunk bed in my old bedroom, sometimes my sister would sleep up in the top
harry potter on cassette above my head in a walkman velcroed to the bedslats
orange gatorade my dad would give me before a kiss goodnight
and my mom would read me stories and fumble a couple lines

and we'd start laughing about the words misspoken
(we'd start laughing about the mess we're in)

and we would forget about the story and where it was going
(we'd be aware and forget being scared by the end)

but we'd pull ourselves together and she'd start the line from the beginning
(pull ourselves together to start moving forward again)

but then one of us would remember and we'd just start cracking up again
(remembering to laugh out the sad held in)
